A couple weeks ago, we put together a suet feeder which consisted of beef tallow, peanut butter, oats, pecans and corn meal. Melted down the beef fat and mixed everything together and stuffed it in an onion bag. I used an old wooden feeder and stuffed the suet bag in it. Didn't see any birds at the feeder until today when I saw one brown bird with longer curved beak, a woodpecker and a cardinal. If there is a birder in the house, help identify! I will try to post a pic.
Interesting! I hadn't thought of making suet. Thanks for the recipe. We bought some bird seed and suet last week, and the birds have finally realized there's food in our backyard.
ReplyDeleteHey Ken - good work w/ the pics! I'm thinking you have a downy woodpecker there. How big was the brown bird with a curved bill?
ReplyDeleteThanks! The brown bird was small but round and plump looking. Wings were a different shade of brown than the body. I wished I could have taken a picture of that one. I've never seen that one around our yard before.
ReplyDeleteWe had a Carolina Wren checking out the suet in our yard when it snowed here. Is that a possibility? (In fact I just looked out the window and see him there now!)
